Compare before you commit
A locked-out caller rings the next number in two minutes
Someone standing outside their own front door does not leave a voicemail. They ring the next locksmith on the list. An AI receptionist keeps that caller on your line, takes what you need to find them, and gets the job to you while you are still driving back from the last one. Compare providers on speed, on how clearly they give your terms, and on how they treat people who are stressed.

What to compare
- How fast a lockout reaches you. A live transfer or an instant text with the address, not a voicemail you hear after the job.
- Whether it reads out your call-out terms in your wording, so the caller hears the same thing you would say.
- How it checks the location. Postcode, street, door colour, flat number and a phone number that works, read back to the caller.
- What it does when you are already on a job. An honest arrival time, or a polite no, is better than a promise you cannot keep.
- How it handles a caller who is upset or unsafe, including someone locked out late at night or after a break-in.

One lockout call, start to finish
An example of how a well-set-up agent might handle a night call. Every line is something you can change with your provider.
- Safety first: is anyone at risk inside?
- Location and door type before anything else
- Your terms in your words, then a text to confirm
- A reminder to have ID ready for the check at the door
- AI agentHello, you’re through to the AI assistant for the locksmith. Are you locked out right now?
- CallerYes, I’ve locked my keys inside. I’m outside the front door.
- AI agentAre you somewhere safe, and is anyone inside, such as a child, or a pan on the hob?
- CallerNo, it’s just me. I’m fine, it’s just cold.
- AI agentThanks. What’s the postcode and the house number? And is it a uPVC door, a wooden door with a Yale-type lock, or something else?
- CallerIt’s a uPVC door. I’ll give you the address.
- AI agentOur engineer’s call-out terms are [read in your words]. Is that okay? I’ll text them to you now with the details.
- AI agentI’ve sent your details to the engineer, who will text you an arrival time. Please have some ID or post with this address to hand when they arrive.
Not every call is a lockout
Four kinds of locksmith job, handled differently
Lockouts
The most urgent and the most common. Location, door type, lock type and whether anyone is at risk inside.
After a break-in
Often with the police already involved. The caller may want the door made secure tonight and new locks fitted later. The agent takes a crime reference if they have one.
Lock changes and upgrades
New tenants, lost keys, insurance requirements. These are booked work, not emergencies, so the agent offers a time.
Commercial and landlord work
Shops, offices and letting agents with several doors. The agent takes the account name and a contact for access.
Trust
Say your terms before you set off
There is no government licence or register for locksmiths, and the Security Industry Authority, which licenses roles such as door supervisors, security guards and key holders, does not cover locksmithing. So callers judge you on what they hear first. Stories about a low phone quote and a much bigger bill at the door make people wary, especially at night.
An AI receptionist reads out the same terms on every call, in the words you choose, and texts them to the caller. If you belong to a trade body or a vetting scheme, it can say so, and give the caller a way to check. Trading Standards advice to the public is to check claimed memberships, ask who will actually turn up, and get a quote before agreeing to the work, so answering those questions up front puts you ahead.
Cancellation rights also work differently for urgent work. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, when a consumer asks a trader to visit for an urgent repair, the usual 14-day right to cancel does not apply to that repair. It can still apply to extra goods or services sold during the visit, such as an upgraded lock the caller did not ask for. Check your own terms with an adviser.
Who is it for?
Proof of residence belongs at the door, not on the phone
Anyone can say they live somewhere. An AI receptionist cannot check, and should not pretend to. What it can do is set the expectation early, so a genuine caller is ready and a dishonest one is put off.
Ask the caller to have ID ready
Photo ID, or post or a bill with the address on it.
Note anything unusual
A caller who cannot give the full address, or who wants a door opened for someone else, is flagged to you.
Leave the judgement to you
You decide on arrival, as you always have. The agent never promises that a door will be opened.
Questions
AI receptionists for locksmiths: your questions

Compare AI receptionistsWhat does an AI receptionist do for a locksmith?
It answers your phone when you are driving or on a job. It asks whether the caller is locked out now, where they are and what kind of door and lock they have, reads out your call-out terms, and sends you the details straight away.
Can it give prices?
Only the terms you write for it, such as a call-out charge or how you price. Many callers have read about locksmiths who quote one price on the phone and charge another at the door, so clear terms before you travel build trust. It should not estimate the cost of work it cannot see.
Does a locksmith need a licence in the UK?
No. There is no government licence or register for locksmiths. Some belong to a trade body with its own checks, such as the Master Locksmiths Association, whose approved firms are criminal-record checked and inspected. The agent can explain any membership or checks you have, in wording you approve.
Should it check that the caller lives at the address?
Not on the phone, where anyone can say anything. It can tell the caller to have ID or post with the address ready, so you can check on arrival. The Master Locksmiths Association’s customer charter, for example, says its firms ask for proof of identity or ownership on lockouts and refuse the job without it.
What if someone is in danger?
If a child or a vulnerable person is locked inside, or there is a risk like a pan on the hob, the agent should tell the caller to dial 999. You agree that wording with your provider and test it before going live.
Can it answer at 3am?
Yes. That is when it helps most. You choose whether night calls ring your mobile, come as a text alert, or are taken for the morning.
Can it tell callers how long I will be?
It should not guess. It can say you will text an arrival time, or give a time you have set if your system shares it. A broken promise at night is worse than no promise.
Will it take car lockouts?
If you do auto work, yes. It asks for the make, model and year and where the car is. If you do not, it can say so politely so the caller can look elsewhere.
Will callers know it is an AI?
They should. A short line at the start is enough. Someone standing outside in the rain wants help fast, and an honest greeting does not slow that down.
Can it take card details?
It should not take card numbers by voice. Some services can send a secure payment link by text if you take deposits.
